What makes a co-parenting expense record court-admissible?

Not all expense records are equal in a family law proceeding. A spreadsheet you edited the night before a hearing won't carry much weight. A screenshot from your phone can be cropped or altered. Even a PDF can be regenerated with different numbers.

For expense documentation to be taken seriously by a judge, mediator, or attorney, it generally needs to satisfy five criteria:

Server-generated timestamps

Every record is timestamped by the server at the moment of submission — not by the user's device, which can be manipulated. Neither parent controls the clock.

Immutable after submission

Once an expense is submitted, neither parent can edit it, delete it, or change the date. The record of what was entered and when is permanently preserved.

Clear attribution

Every expense, dispute, and resolution shows exactly which parent submitted it — creating an unambiguous record of who entered what and when.

Complete, including disputes

The Court Record Export includes every expense ever submitted — approved and disputed — along with all dispute notes and resolution history. Nothing is hidden.

Cryptographically verifiable — the integrity hash

Joey Tab computes a SHA-256 hash over all expense data, audit log entries, and settlements at the moment you generate a Court Record Export. This hash is printed prominently on the document. If even a single character is altered in the exported document — a date, an amount, a name — the hash of the modified document will be completely different from the one printed on it, making any tampering immediately detectable.

Example SHA-256 integrity hash

Generated at the moment of export. Any alteration to the records produces a completely different hash.

What's in the export — and how to generate it

The Court Record Export is available to all Joey Tab subscribers directly from the dashboard. It takes about two seconds to generate and produces a print-ready document you can present to your attorney, mediator, or the court.

1

Open your dashboard → scroll to Court Records Export

The Court Records Export section lives below the monthly Statements panel. Select a year or choose "All Years" for a complete lifetime record.

2

Click "Generate Report"

Joey Tab fetches all expense records, settlements, and audit log entries from the server — including every dispute and its resolution — and computes a SHA-256 integrity hash over the entire dataset.

3

A print-ready document opens in a new tab

The document includes: a report ID and generation timestamp, the parties listed (both parents and child), a complete expense register, dispute history, settlement log, full chronological audit trail, and the SHA-256 integrity hash at the top and bottom.

4

Print to PDF or hand to your attorney

Use your browser's Print dialog (Cmd+P / Ctrl+P) and choose "Save as PDF." The document is formatted for letter-size paper. You can send it directly to your attorney, include it in court filings, or provide it to a mediator.

Why courts recommend OurFamilyWizard — and why Joey Tab meets the same standard for expenses

Family courts and attorneys often recommend OurFamilyWizard because the platform maintains a certified, immutable record of all communications and activities — messages cannot be edited or deleted, and the record is considered trustworthy for legal proceedings.

Joey Tab provides the same protections specifically for shared expense records. Neither parent can alter a submitted expense. Every action is permanently logged with a server-generated timestamp. The Court Record Export includes a cryptographic hash that proves the data is unchanged.

The difference is cost and scope. OurFamilyWizard charges $170+ per parent per year for a full communications platform — messaging, custody calendars, tone checker, info bank. If you already communicate with your co-parent through another channel and specifically need a clean, court-ready expense record, Joey Tab delivers the legal documentation standard at a fraction of the price.

Court records — frequently asked questions

For expense records to hold up in family court, they generally need to be: timestamped at the time of entry (not retroactively), immutable after submission, clearly attributed to a specific person, complete (including disputed items and resolutions), and verifiable against tampering. Joey Tab is designed to satisfy all five requirements. The SHA-256 integrity hash on the Court Record Export provides the cryptographic verification layer that most expense tools lack entirely.

If your order specifically names OurFamilyWizard, you should comply with that order. If your order requires "documented expense tracking," a "verifiable record," or similar language without naming a specific tool, Joey Tab's tamper-evident records and Court Record Export are designed to meet that standard. Review your specific order with your family law attorney before switching.

No. Expense records in Joey Tab are append-only — once an expense is submitted, neither parent can edit the amount, date, description, or any other field, and neither parent can delete the record. The only actions available are to dispute an expense (which adds a note and flags it — the original record remains) or to mark a dispute as resolved. All of these actions are themselves logged in the audit trail.

A SHA-256 hash is a cryptographic fingerprint — a 64-character string uniquely derived from the contents of a document. It's the same technology used to verify software downloads and sign legal contracts digitally. When Joey Tab generates your Court Record Export, it computes this hash over all the records in the export. The hash is printed on the document itself. If the document is altered in any way after export — even a single digit in one expense amount — the hash of the modified document will be completely different from the printed hash. This makes tampering immediately detectable and provides an independent mechanism for verification.

Yes. The Court Record Export is included on both the Starter ($9/mo) and Family ($12/mo) plans. Both parents can generate it at any time — you don't need to coordinate with your co-parent or request it in advance. Each export is independent and includes all records up to the moment of generation.

Some co-parents use OurFamilyWizard for messaging and custody coordination, and Joey Tab specifically for expense tracking — because Joey Tab's expense features (receipt scanning, AI statements, budget proposals, court export with integrity hash) are significantly more advanced. If your co-parenting situation requires court-ordered use of OurFamilyWizard, using both tools together is a reasonable approach. Joey Tab is purpose-built for one thing and does it better.
